GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia graduate forward Haley Hopkins was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week, while Notre Dame freshman defender Leah Klenke earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Hopkins delivered four goals on the week, including the game-winning score Thursday in a 1-0 victory at No. 11 Georgetown and a hat trick against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday. The win over the Hoyas marked Virginia’s first-ever road win at Georgetown. Hopkins’ hat trick on Sunday was her first as a Cavalier and the first by a UVA player since Diana Ordoñez delivered one against Rice on May 5, 2021, in the NCAA Tournament. It was the fourth multiple-goal game in Hopkins’ two-year career at Virginia.
Klenke started at left wing back in both matches last week, as the Fighting Irish dominated in a 2-0 win on Thursday at No. 19 Saint Louis before returning home for a 4-0 triumph over Illinois on Sunday. She also scored one goal in the Illinois match. The Irish surrendered only two shots in the Saint Louis contest and out-shot the Billikens, 26-2, and followed that stout defensive outing up by allowing only three shots on goal on Sunday. Notre Dame has allowed only four shots on goal in four matches this season.
Through the first two weeks of the season, ACC women’s soccer teams have combined for a 42-4-8 record (85.2% winning percentage). Non-conference action continues Wednesday, with Pitt playing host to Kent State. There are three matchups of top-10 teams on the ACC schedule this weekend. On Thursday, No. 5 Duke hosts No. 6 UCLA. On Sunday, No. 1 North Carolina entertains UCLA at noon on ACC Network, while Duke travels to No. 7 TCU.
