GREENVILLE, N.C. – Trailing by one, East Carolina missed a 41-yard game-winning field goal attempt in the final seconds as #13 NC State opened the season with a 21-20 road win.
ECU struck first with a TD midway through the first quarter, but the Pack responded with three straight scores to go into the half up 21-7.
QB Devin Leary found WR Thayer Thomas from 12 yards out to open the Pack's scoring. Then the NC State special teams got into the scoring action, as WR Jasiah Provillon blocked an ECU punt, and SAF Sean Brown fell on the ball in the end zone for a Wolfpack TD.
In the second quarter, Demie Sumo-Karngbaye scored his first career score, going in from 24 yards out in the final minute of the first half.
The Pirates added a TD with just 2:58 left, but missed the extra point to leave the score at 21-20. ECU drove the ball down for a 41-yard game-winning field goal attempt with nine seconds left, but the kick was no good.
