NC State’s Kelly, Wake’s Amponsah Earn ACC Men’s Soccer Player of Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State graduate midfielder Conor Kelly was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, and Wake Forest junior defender Prince Amponsah was selected the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Kelly scored four goals in the Wolfpack’s games against Wofford and Mercer. His hat trick against Wofford on Aug. 29 was the first by an ACC player this season and the first for a member of the Wolfpack men's soccer program since at least the 2013 season. A native of Rumson, New Jersey, he also netted the team’s lone goal on Friday against Mercer less than a minute and a half into the game. Kelly has now totaled five goals and scored in each of the Wolfpack’s first three matches of the season.

A native of Bronx, New York, Amponsah anchored a backline that did not allow a shot on goal in Wake Forest’s 2-0 road victory over UAB. The Demon Deacons’ clean sheet marked the first time this season UAB was held scoreless. Through Amponsah's leadership at the back, Wake Forest dominated the possession for a total of 64 percent of the match. Wake Forest has conceded just one goal this season.

After five non-conference matches Tuesday, ACC men’s soccer opens league play this weekend. The league slate starts Friday with a pair of matches, as Pitt travels to North Carolina at 7 p.m., while Virginia Tech visits Virginia at 8 p.m. in a contest that airs on ACC Network. On Saturday, the schedule consists of Notre Dame at Syracuse, NC State at Wake Forest, Clemson at Boston College and Duke at Louisville.
