GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia 197-pound grad student Michael Battista and Virginia Tech 149-pound freshman Caleb Henson have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week for Jan. 17.
Battista ground his way to a 4-0 week at the Virginia Duals to help the Cavaliers go 3-1 at the event, including two wins over ranked opponents. The Ashburn, Virginia, native secured a 7-6 decision over No. 29 Jake Koser of Navy to help the Hoos to an undefeated opening day at the Duals. He then grabbed the 3-1 sudden-victory decision over No. 11 Jaxon Smith in the dual with No. 23 Maryland to pull UVA within two points in the team scoring with one weight class to go. The win over No. 11 Smith marked the highest-ranked win of the year for Battista, who improved to 21-5 on the year and 6-1 in dual matches this season.
Virginia Tech’s 11th-ranked Henson earned his third ACC Wrestler of the Week honor of the season following a 6-4 sudden victory decision over Appalachian State’s No. 8 Jon Millner, a two-time All-American and four-time Southern Conference champion. Henson finished regulation with a takedown with 0:40 left in the bout and earned the rideout to send the match into sudden victory tied at 4-4. Henson defended a Millner double and shoot for a knee pull of his own and a takedown to secure the 6-4 victory in overtime. It was the Cartersville, Georgia, native’s second top-10 victory of the season and third over a returning All-American.
