CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (theACC.com) – The top two seeds, North Carolina and Duke, posted victories Wednesday in the semifinals of the 2023 ACC Field Hockey Championship at the University of Virginia’s Turf Field in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The top-seeded Tar Heels and second-seeded Blue Devils will play for the championship at 7 p.m. Friday on ACC Network. The teams tied for first place in the ACC regular-season standings with 5-1 records and just played last Friday, with UNC rallying for a 2-1 home win.

No. 1 North Carolina 3, No. 4 Virginia 2
North Carolina (13-3) advanced to its ninth consecutive championship game after leading for nearly 58 minutes of the contest. UNC scored just 2:15 into the game on Ryleigh Heck’s twisting goal, and the Tar Heels added a second goal eight minutes later from Pleun Lammers.

While the Tar Heels held the early momentum, Virginia (12-6) took much of it back and got its home crowd into the game when Dani Mendez-Trendler scored her eighth goal of the season with 10:10 left in the second quarter.

After UVa pulled its goalkeeper with 5:53 remaining in regulation, ACC Freshman of the Year Charly Bruder scored off a corner with 3:50 remaining for a 3-1 UNC lead. The Cavaliers countered two minutes later on a Jans Croon score off a corner, but UVa was unable to find the equalizer.

No. 2 Duke 1, No. 3 Louisville 0
Duke (16-3) recorded its second shutout in as many days, as goalkeeper Piper Hampsch made six saves in leading the Blue Devils to their first ACC championship game since 2011 and their fourth appearance in program history. Duke is vying for its first ACC crown.

Hannah Miller scored 53 seconds into the second quarter off an assist from Alaina McVeigh, and that was all the offense the Blue Devils would need as they recorded their ACC-best eighth shutout of the season, including their second of the year against Louisville (14-6).
