GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest grad student Tyree Appleby earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Boston College guard Chas Kelley III and Syracuse guard Judah Mintz shared the ACC Rookie of the Week award.
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
A native of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Appleby averaged 25.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.5 steals in wins over North Carolina and Georgia Tech. He scored a season-high 35 points and added 11 assists and seven rebounds in the Tuesday win over UNC. He set ACC records in free throws made (23) and free throws attempted (28), breaking a pair of records that had stood since the 1950s. Appleby followed up by playing all 40 minutes against Georgia Tech, totaling 16 points and six assists in a one-point win. With the Demon Deacons trailing by a point in the waning seconds, Appleby drove and drew a foul with 2.3 seconds remaining before hitting both free throws to lift Wake to the win.
Kelley averaged 12.0 points, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals against Virginia Tech and NC State. The native of Houston, Texas, recorded a career-high 17 points and tied his season high with four assists while committing no turnovers in the 82-76 win at Virginia Tech on Wednesday. He played a career-best 31 minutes against the Hokies, subbing in for the injured Jaeden Zackery. Kelley connected on 5-of-8 shots from the floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Entering the Virginia Tech game, he had scored 12 total points with two made 3-pointers in his 10 ACC contests. Kelley added seven points and three steals in 21 minutes off the bench at home Saturday against NC State.
Mintz scored 16 points and dished out six assists in Syracuse’s Wednesday win at Florida State. The Fort Washington, Maryland, native scored 14 of his points in the second half. With Syracuse trailing, 54-49 in the second half, the Orange went on a 15-2 run, with Mintz scoring 10 of the 15 points in the stretch.
