ACC Releases First Weekly Awards for 2023 Women’s Lacrosse Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse grad attack Meaghan Tyrrell was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Louisville junior goalie Sara Addeche and North Carolina sophomore goalie Alecia Nicholas shared Defensive Player of the Week honors in the first ACC weekly awards for the 2023 season.

Also named the IWLCA National Player of the Week, Tyrrell played a role in eight of Syracuse's 16 goals in the Orange’s 16-15 win Saturday over No. 4 Northwestern. The native of Mount Sinai, New York, scored a pair of goals – including the eventual game winner – and also racked up a career-high six assists. After the Wildcats fought back from a four-goal deficit in the second half to tie the score at 13-13, Tyrrell recorded assists on the next two goals and then scored with 1:10 remaining on the clock to put the game out of reach.

Addeche recorded 21 saves in Louisville’s first two games, both against ranked opponents in No. 9 Denver and No. 25 Colorado. The Foxborough, Massachusetts, native limited No. 9 Denver to five goals, while recording seven saves. She doubled her career high with 14 saves Sunday in Louisville’s win against Colorado, the Cardinals’ first over a ranked team since Feb. 18, 2021. Her 14 saves rank 10th on the Cardinals’ record board for saves in a single game.

Nicholas made 14 saves with a .609 save percentage in UNC’s season-opening victory over No. 12 James Madison, the Tar Heels’ 41st consecutive regular-season win. It was Nicholas’ first career start between the pipes, and the 10th appearance of the sophomore’s career, as she is UNC's first new starting keeper since 2018. The native of Ithaca, New York, made two key saves near the end of the first half to help the Tar Heels maintain a 7-5 lead at the break.

Seven ACC teams are ranked in the latest IL Women/IWLCA national poll, with UNC (1), Boston College (3), Syracuse (4), Duke (11), Virginia (13), Notre Dame (14) and Louisville (24). The Cardinals joined the rankings this week, and the ACC’s seven ranked teams is the most of any conference.
