GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships began Tuesday in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. North Carolina took the lead after day one with 202 points behind two podium finishes in the women’s 3-meter diving event, while NC State holds the lead on the men’s side following a podium finish in the 1-meter diving event to accompany a pair of relay wins.

The championships continue through Saturday.

North Carolina junior Aranza Vazquez took the 3-meter crown, posting a score 381.85 through six dives. Mia Vallee of Miami finished behind her in second as the senior accumulated a score of 367.20. The Tar Heels finished with two on the podium as redshirt senior Emily Grund took third, scoring 350.90.

Virginia’s women’s 200-yard medley relay time of 1:31.73 broke the ACC, NCAA, ACC Championship, US Open and American records The Cavaliers’ squad of Gretchen Walsh, Alex Walsh, Lexi Cuomo and Kate Douglass broke the same records set by Virginia at the 2022 ACC Championships.  
 
NC State finished in second in 1:33.02, followed by Louisville in third in 1:34.23. North Carolina’s time of 1:34.70 secured all four times meeting NCAA A cut standards for automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships.
 
The Cavaliers captured the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay title in 6:55.15, ahead of Louisville who took second in 6Z:57.51 and NC State who placed third in 6:59.22. All three podium finish times earned NCAA A cuts.
 
NC State’s men won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:22.25. The Wolfpack’s team of Kacper Stokowski, Mason Hunter, Nyls Korstanje and David Curtiss just edged out Virginia, who placed second in 1:23.03. Louisville came in third in 1:23.59, ensuring the three top times earned NCAA A cuts.
 
The Wolfpack added their second relay victory of the night, swimming a 6:10.65 in the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay, with Louisville finishing second in 6:11.26 and Virginia Tech placing third in 6:14.86. All three top times earned NCAA A cuts.
 
Miami junior Max Flory was crowned the men’s 1-meter champion with his score of 408.15, the lone diver to break 400 points. North Carolina’s Anton Down-Jenkins took second place with 395. 75 points and NC State’s Renato Calderaro placed third with 374.35.

The championships continue Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with preliminary events.
