GREENSBORO, N.C. (theacc.com) – The Virginia women had a banner day on the third day of the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC), adding another American Record and sweeping the women’s individual events, to take a comfortable lead in the team standings. NC State maintained a lead on the men’s side after multiple podium finishes in Thursday’s competition.
The competition continues through Saturday.
Virginia’s Ella Nelson claimed the title in the women’s 400-yard IM, setting a meet and GAC pool record with her NCAA qualifying time of 3:59.33 (also a qualifying NCAA A cut). Grace Sheble of NC State finished in second in 4:04.98 and Louisville’s Abby Hay took third in 4:05.23.
Notre Dame’s Jack Hoagland took the men’s 400-yard IM title, touching the wall at 3:41.15, for the Irish’s first title of the 2023 Championships. Virginia Tech’s Nico Garcia placed second in 3:41.63 with NC State’s Owen Lloyd behind him in third in 3:42.16.
Virginia’s Kate Douglass put on a clinic again Thursday night, setting an ACC, NCAA, ACC Championship, US Open and American Record in the women’s 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.84. Her teammate and fellow Olympian Gretchen Walsh also beat the meet time (49.86) and finished in second in 49.34. Louisville’s Gabi Albiero took third in 50.04. With NC State’s Abby Arens’ time of 50.84, the top four times all qualified as NCAA A cut.
Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan added another podium finish to his Championships resume, this time on top in first place of the men’s 100-yard butterfly, swimming a GAC pool record in 43.93. Aiden Hayes (44.66) and Nyls Korstanje (44.70) finished second and third for NC State. All three top times earned NCAA A cuts.
The Cavaliers went 1-2 in the women’s 200-yard freestyle as Alex Walsh secured the third first-place finish for Virginia in 1:41.3 and teammate Aimee Canny took second in 1:42.62, both times qualifying as NCAA A cuts. Emma Atkinson claimed the bronze with her time of 1:43.31.
Miami’s Max Flory repeated as the 3-meter diving ACC Champion, scoring a 456.20, sweeping both diving events. North Carolina’s Anton Down-Jenkins placed second with a score of 447.30 followed by Pitt’s Dylan Reed in third with 405.10 points.
The Championships continue Friday at 9:30 a.m. with preliminary events. Friday’s finals events start at 5:30 p.m. and will air live on ACC Network Extra and are also accessible via the WatchESPN app. Direct links to the ACCNX feeds and live swimming and diving results are available at theACC.com.
