True to form, the session-closing distance medley relay provided some of the most stirring moments.

The Duke women’s foursome of Dalia Frias, Megan McGinnis, Lauren Tolbert and Amina Maatoug took the gold medal with an overall ACC record time of 10:49.87. The silver medal time of Notre Dame (10:51.52) and NC State (10:52.16) were also faster than the previous league mark. Blue Devil miler Maatoug posted a 4:29.84 closing effort to keep her team in front, even as Notre Dame’s Olivia Markezich also finished strong and Katelyn Tuohy’s closing 4:23.36 push carried the Wolfpack from seventh place into third.

Virginia appeared to have won the men’s DMR in meet-record time, but a disqualification opened the door for rival Virginia Tech to snare the gold medal. With anchor Antonio Lopez Segura delivering a closing mile in just more than 3:56, the Hokies’ winning time of 9:28.86 will also stand as the ACC Championship record.

Louisville’s Cameron Miller will have to wait until Saturday to run for the men’s 200 gold medal, but the junior still made a bit of history on his home track. Miller ran a blazing time of 20.33 in Thursday’s prelim, breaking the previous ACC championship meet record of 20.43 that had stood since 2000. Miller also topped his own facility record of 20.52 set late last month.

Thursday also proved a good day for repeat champions.

Less than a week after setting the overall ACC record in the women’s weight throw, Virginia Tech senior Rebecca Mammel broke the ACC Championship mark she set last year with a gold medal toss of 23.29 meters (76-5) that now stands as the new facility record.

And Notre Dame’s Jadin O’Brien successfully defended her ACC title in the pentathlon with a personal best and facility record score of 4,377 that ranks No. 1 nationally in NCAA Division I this season.

NC State junior Kelsey Chmiel took the women’s  5,000 meters with a facility record time of 15:55.54, adding another gold medal to her stellar Wolfpack distance career.

The men’s 5,000 meters provided the most remarkable result of the day, as the unseeded final (section one) produced the top five finishers. Syracuse senior Paul O’Donnell took the gold medal with a facility record and personal best of 13:50.94.

Louisville All-American Trey Allen joined Miller in pleasing the home crowd with a facility-record high jump of 2.21 meters (7-3). Allen and freshman teammate Brion Stephens each posted the same mark on Thursday, with Allen earning the win on progressions.

The men’s weight throw closed out Thursday’s field events, and Decio Andrade delivered for Miami with a personal best and facility record mark of 22.52 meters (73-10.75).

Day two of the three-day ACC Championship is set for Friday, beginning with the heptathlon high hurdles at 11 a.m.

ACC Network Extra will continue its full coverage of the Championships on Friday and Saturday. Shawn Kenney returns to handle play-by-play and will be joined by former Duke head coach Norm Ogilvie as color analyst and Hailey Hunter as sideline reporter.
