Hokies Sweep ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (theACC.com) – The Virginia Tech men claimed the title for the third consecutive year, and the Hokie women raised a trophy for the second year in a row as the  2023 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded Saturday at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Entertainment Center.

Returning to a formula that has proven quite successful, the Virginia Tech men scored in double figures in five field events, including a whopping 26.5 points in the pole vault, where gold medalist Conner McClure led four Virginia Tech competitors among the top eight.

The Hokies won with 110.5 points, followed by Florida State (76), Clemson (74.5), Louisville (68) and North Carolina (63).

After sharing the 2022 ACC Indoor championship with Duke, the Virginia Tech women held off the Blue Devils by a 93-91 score on Saturday. Duke went into the final leg of the closing 4x400 relay with a chance to pull ahead, but a lost baton resulted in a disqualification on what would have been a meet record, and the Hokies remained in front.

Virginia Tech and Duke were followed in the women’s scoring by third-place Clemson (68), NC State (61) and Miami (60).

The Hokie men have now won eight total ACC titles under veteran head coach Dave Cianelli, all of which have come since 2011. Cianelli led the Virginia Tech women’s program to the league championship for the third time in four years and the fifth time overall.

It marks the eighth year that the same school has swept both Indoor championships.

Next up for numerous ACC student-athletes will be the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track Championships, which will be held March 10-11 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The top 16 national times and marks in each event will qualify, along with the top 12 relay teams.
