GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse junior attack Emma Ward was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Syracuse senior goalie Delaney Sweitzer earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third consecutive week and fourth time this season.
A native of Babylon, New York, Ward led the Orange with eight points in their win against No. 6 Stony Brook on Tuesday. She tied her career high with seven assists, which match the second most on Syracuse’s single-game record list. Five of her assists came during the Orange’s 8-1 scoring run that erased a one-goal deficit and gave Syracuse its largest lead at 16-9. She had two points in the first half against Louisville as the Orange built a 10-2 halftime lead and went on to their 11th straight victory. Ward finished with a goal and two assists against the Cardinals, finishing with two goals and nine assists for the week.
A native of Hatfield, Pennsylvania, Sweitzer totaled eight saves in Syracuse’s win against No. 6 Stony Brook. She made four saves in the second half, holding the Seawolves to just three goals after halftime as the Orange pulled away for a 16-11 victory. Sweitzer made six saves and allowed only three goals in just over 40 minutes of action against Louisville.
Seven ACC teams are ranked in the latest IL Women/IWLCA national poll, with Syracuse again holding the top spot. North Carolina (3), Boston College (7), Virginia (11), Notre Dame (12), Duke (20) and Clemson (22). The ACC’s seven ranked teams are the most of any conference.
ACC teams will be featured in a pair of national television broadcasts this week, beginning Tuesday as top-ranked Syracuse entertains Cornell at 6 p.m. on ESPNU. ACC Network will televise the showdown between No. 3 North Carolina and No. 12 Notre Dame at noon Saturday.
