GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech sophomore guard Miles Kelly earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Duke center Kyle Filipowski picked up the ACC Rookie of the Week award for the ninth time this season. Filipowski finishes with the fourth most Rookie of the Week laurels in ACC history, tying Duke’s Austin Rivers (2012) and just one off the league record, held by Georgia Tech’s Kenny Anderson (1990), North Carolina Tyler Hansbrough (2006) and Duke’s Jabari Parker (2014).
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
Kelly averaged 25.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists as the Yellow Jackets scored victories at Syracuse and Boston College. The native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, shot 17-for-33 from the field (51.5%), 12-for-25 from behind the arc (48%) and 5-6 from the free throw line (83.3%). He scored a career-high 30 points in the Yellow Jackets win at Syracuse, hitting 10-of-19 shots from the floor and 7-of-14 from three-point range, all career highs. He followed that performance by scoring 21 points at Boston College, hitting 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-11 from three-point range. In that game, he made a pair of threes to start an 11-0 run to rally the Jackets back from a 55-46 deficit, then added another from NBA range to give the Jackets the lead for good, 66-63 with 1:46 to go.
A native of Westtown, New York, Filipowski averaged 16.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game as Duke defeated Triangle rivals NC State and North Carolina last week. Filipowski posted double-doubles in each contest, with 11 points and 14 rebounds in the Tuesday win over NC State, and followed that a monster 22-point, 13-rebound effort at North Carolina. Filipowski was 14-of-17 at the free throw line for the week (7-of-9 vs. NC State and 7-of-8 vs. UNC), including 4-of-5 in the game’s closing minutes at UNC to ice the win. The 20-point game at UNC was his fourth this season and marked his team-leading 27th double-figure scoring effort in 31 games. Filipowski’s 14 double-doubles are tied for fourth most by a Duke freshman (matching the number posted by Zion Williamson, Jabari Parker and Gene Banks), while his 122 free throws made are ninth most by a Duke freshman.
