GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Undefeated NCAA champion Nino Bonaccorsi has been named the 2022-23 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced on Monday.
Bonaccorsi, a graduate student from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, completed a 21-0 season by claiming the 197-pound gold medal at last month’s NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He became the 17th NCAA wrestling champion in Pitt school history and the first since current head coach Keith Gavin won at 174 pounds in 2008.
Bonaccorsi is the sixth wrestler in Pitt history to finish a wrestling season unbeaten and untied, and he joined North Carolina’s Austin O’Connor (157 pounds) to give the ACC multiple NCAA wrestling gold medalists for the first time since 1994.
Named to the All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team for the third consecutive year and eligible for repeat selection to the NWCA Scholar All-America Team, Bonaccorsi is completing a second degree in Corporate and Community Relations at Pitt after earning his first in English Writing in 2022.
A fan favorite throughout his time at Pitt, Bonaccorsi completed his collegiate wrestling career with 119 wins and was a three-time All-American (NCAA -2021 and 2023; NWCA - 2020).
A record number of student-athletes earned selection to the 2022-23 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team, with each of the league’s six programs boasting multiple selections.
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s matches.
