Virginia Tech's Hurley, Miami's Ligon Earn ACC Baseball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech junior outfielder Jack Hurley has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Miami sophomore righthander Karson Ligon was voted the ACC Pitcher of the Week.

ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Hurley hit .550 for the week (11-for-20) while leading the Hokies to a midweek victory over VMI and a series win over No. 5 Virginia. The Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, native hit five home runs in the four games while driving in 11 runs and slugging 1.400 and tying for the team lead in runs scored with seven. Hurley gave Tech its final lead during its series finale against Virginia, homering to put the Hokies up 7-6 in the sixth inning. Hurley also played errorless baseball while manning two outfield positions during the week (10 chances).

Against rival Florida State in Friday night’s series opener, Miami’s Ligon tossed eight scoreless innings for the first time in his career. Ligon tied his career-long in innings pitched, scattering three hits along the way. The Sarasota, Florida, native struck out six Seminoles while crafting a 95-pitch masterpiece. Ligon retired the Seminoles on five pitches in both the second and fifth frames and recorded a seven-pitch third. The 6-foot-2, 206-pound ace led Miami to an 11-0 victory, which matched the second-largest shutout win in series history. Ligon’s outing set the tone against the Seminoles, as the Hurricanes recorded their first weekend sweep of Florida State in 22 years.
