CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College won the 2023 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship presented by Ally on Sunday, rallying from a three-goal deficit in the second half to top six-time reigning champion North Carolina, 11-9, at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The top-seeded Eagles (16-3) captured their first ACC women’s lacrosse crown, which also marked the school’s first ACC championship in any women’s sport.

The Eagles’ defense clamped down in the second half, giving up just a pair of Tar Heel goals and none over the game’s final 22 minutes, 55 seconds, while also forcing 10 UNC turnovers. Boston College scored the final five goals of the game in rallying from a 9-6 deficit with just under two minutes left in the third quarter.

BC freshman goalkeeper Shea Dolce was named the tournament MVP after totaling 19 saves in three games. Kayla Martello recorded a hat trick, while Mckenna Davis tallied three assists to pace the Eagles’ offense. Olivia Dirks, Alyssa Long and Melissa Sconone each scored two goals for No. 3 seed North Carolina (14-4).

BC and UNC matched up in the ACC championship game for the fourth time in the last five ACC tournaments. The programs also squared off in the 2022 NCAA Championship Game.

It was all North Carolina early, as the Tar Heels jumped to a 4-1 lead nearly 11 minutes into game and led 5-2 after a quarter following Sconone’s score with 11 seconds remaining. Dirks scored with 9:49 left in the second quarter to give UNC a 7-4 advantage, but the Eagles’ defense tightened and allowed BC pulled to within one, 7-6, following back-to-back goals from Andrea Reynolds and Kayla Martello to start the second half.

Caitlyn Wurzburger scored what proved to be the final UNC goal with 7:56 left in the third quarter, giving UNC a three-goal lead once again.

BC then scored on each of its next five shots to rally and grab its first lead of the day. Cassidy Weeks and Courtney Weeks scored in the final two minutes of the third quarter to cut the lead to 9-8 after three quarters. After a UNC turnover to start the fourth quarter, Martello tied the game at the 13:55 mark. BC won the next two draws and converted both into quick scores from Belle Smith and Andrea Reynolds with just over 12 minutes remaining.
