GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Three Atlantic Coast Conference teams are among the 16 that remain standing in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship field, and the league is assured of placing at least one team in the College World Series for the 17th consecutive year.
While top-seeded Wake Forest (50-10) prepares to welcome No. 16 seed Alabama (43-19) in one Super Regional this weekend, No. 7 Virginia (48-12) will play host to ACC Coastal Division rival Duke (38-22) with the winner of each series advancing to the CWS.
A total of eight Super Regionals are scheduled this weekend. Each will be a best-of-three format, with the winners moving on to Omaha, Nebraska, for the Men’s College World Series on June 16-26 at Charles Schwab Field.
The Duke-Virginia series is slated to begin with a noon game on Friday (ESPN2), while Wake Forest will open against the Crimson Tide at noon on Saturday (ESPN).
Wake Forest seeks its third trip to Omaha and the first since winning the College World Series in 1955. Virginia seeks its sixth trip – all previous five have come since 2009 – and its second NCAA title after bringing home the crown in 2015. Duke seeks its fourth College World Series appearance and first since making three trips in 10 seasons (1952-61).
This year’s Wake Forest team, seeded No. 1 overall in the tournament field, averaged an NCAA-record 16 runs per game in sweeping three regional games versus George Mason (twice) and Maryland last weekend. The Demon Deacons also became the first team in program history to hit the 50-win mark.
Virginia is Super Regional bound for the eighth time in the last 15 years. The Cavaliers improved to 35-4 at Disharoon Park with last weekend’s NCAA Regional wins over Army and East Carolina (twice), matching the school record for single-season victories at home.
Duke advanced by winning three of four games in the Conway Regional, capped by Monday night’s 12-3 victory over host Coastal Carolina. The Blue Devils’ three Super Regional appearances since 2018 are tied for the most with North Carolina (2018, 2019, 2022) in the ACC. Duke’s MJ Metz, despite playing with a torn ACL, earned Regional MVP honors after hitting three home runs in last Friday night’s win over UNC Wilmington and another Monday night in the win over Coastal.
The Blue Devils won two of three versus the Cavaliers when the team met in Charlottesville during the regular season (April 28-30)
The ACC has placed at least one team in each of the previous 16 College World Series (no CWS was held in 2020 due to the pandemic), and multiple conference teams have made the trip to Omaha 10 years during that span. A total of 29 ACC teams – nearly a quarter of the total field – have earned CWS berths since 2006.
Eight ACC teams were selected to compete in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The ACC has placed at least six teams in the NCAA tournament for 19 straight years. This marked the seventh year since 2010 at least eight ACC teams landed spots in the field.
