Duke’s Lageyre, UNC’s Bell Named ACC Women’s Soccer Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke sophomore midfielder Carina Lageyre was selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week and North Carolina redshirt-senior defender Maycee Bell was chosen the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Sept. 11-17.

Lageyre scored both of Duke’s goals in a 2-0 victory at Boston College on Sunday. The Cooper City, Florida, native opened the scoring in the third minute, which was the quickest goal the Blue Devils have scored this season. She later added an insurance goal in the 32nd minute to give Duke a two-goal advantage and put the match out of reach. Both goals were the first tallies of the midfielder’s season.

Bell was a staple along the North Carolina backline that claimed its fifth shutout of the season, as the Tar Heels blanked Virginia Tech, 1-0, on Friday. The Wichita, Kansas, native led the defense that held the Hokies without a second-half shot attempt and just eight shots for the match. UNC has allowed just four goals this season, tied for the second-fewest in the ACC.

Conference play continues Thursday with a pair of potential top 25 matchups, as Notre Dame heads to Duke and North Carolina travels to Virginia. Both matches kickoff at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

On Sunday, the action resumes with a full slate of league matchups headlined by a Women’s College Cup and ACC title game rematch when Florida State visits North Carolina for a noon kickoff on ESPNU. The Seminoles bested the Tar Heels for the ACC title, but UNC avenged the setback with a semifinal victory in last year’s College Cup.
