CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville junior forward Gage Guerra was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Wake Forest junior goalkeeper Trace Alphin claimed ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Guerra scored a goal in each of Louisville’s wins last week against Bellarmine and UNC Greensboro. A junior from Houston, Texas, the forward scored the Cardinals’ first goal in the 15th minute in a 3-0 win over Bellarmine on Monday. He then scored UofL’s opening goal in the ninth minute of a 2-0 road triumph on Friday night at UNC Greensboro. Guerra also was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday.
Alphin was instrumental in securing a clean sheet in a 0-0 decision at No. 20 Maryland on Friday night. The junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, recorded three saves on the night, none bigger than a 72nd-minute penalty kick save, diving to his right to stop an attempt by Maryland's Stefan Copetti. He also notched a stop in the 89th minute to preserve the shutout and a result against a top-25 team. Alphin also had numerous punch outs on five Terrapin corner kicks.
ACC Network features a big non-conference doubleheader Tuesday night with four top-15 teams, as No. 8 Pitt plays host to No. 5 Marshall at 6 p.m. and No. 13 Louisville entertains No. 2 Kentucky at 8 p.m. Conference play begins this weekend, including a doubleheader on ACCN with Boston College at NC State at 6 p.m. and No. 13 Louisville at No. 1 Syracuse at 8 p.m.
