CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia sophomore forward Meredith McDermott was selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week and North Carolina freshman defender Savy King was chosen the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Aug. 28-Sept. 3.
McDermott tallied three goals in a pair of non-conference victories last week, as Virginia remained unbeaten on the season. In Thursday’s match with West Virginia, the Nashua, New Hampshire, native recorded her second brace of the season and led the Cavaliers to a 2-1 victory over the Mountaineers. On Sunday, the sophomore scored her third goal of the week less than a minute into the match against VCU. The goal, which came at the 0:55 mark, was the fifth-fastest regular-season goal in program history.
King was the centerpiece of a backline that posted two victories last week, headlined by UNC’s 3-1 victory over No. 8 Arkansas on Sunday. Prior to Sunday’s win, the Tar Heels blanked Gardner-Webb 5-0 on Thursday, as the defense allowed just one shot in the match. Against the Razorbacks, King and the North Carolina backline regrouped after a first-half goal and allowed just five shots on goal to help stir the comeback.
ACC Women’s Soccer action resumes on Thursday headlined by a trio of ranked matchups, as North Carolina heads to South Carolina for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPNU. Also, at 7 p.m., Arkansas visits Clemson on ACC Network Extra while Pitt takes on Xavier.
