CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse graduate guard Dyaisha Fair has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Virginia guard Kymora Johnson earned Rookie of the Week honors.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Fair averaged 26.5 points and finished last week 15-for-32 (46.9 percent) from 3-point range, as she led Syracuse to wins over No. 15 Florida State and Pitt. The Rochester, New York, native posted a season-high 31 points and buried a program-record nine 3-pointers in Thursday’s upset of FSU. With her 31 points, she became the fastest Syracuse player to reach 1,000 points in an Orange uniform, eclipsing the mark in just 50 games. The guard also recorded a team-high 22 points in Sunday’s victory over Pitt, as she made six treys, including four in the second quarter.
Johnson averaged 25.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists and shot 58.8 percent (20-for-34) from the field against nationally-ranked Notre Dame and Florida State. The Charlottesville, Virginia, native capped off her week with a career-high 35 points and finished 14-for-20 (70.0 percent) from the field to lead Virginia to a 91-87 upset over the 15th-ranked Seminoles. The guard joined former standout Dawn Staley as the only Cavalier freshmen to score at least 35 points in a game, as the win marked UVA’s first true road win over a ranked opponent since the 2010-11 season.
Seven ACC teams are ranked in the latest Associated Press (AP) Poll, the most among all conferences. NC State continues to lead the way at No. 7, while Notre Dame rounds out the top 15 at No. 15. Louisville is No. 18, Virginia Tech is No. 19, North Carolina is No. 20, Syracuse is No. 22 and Florida State is No. 23. Miami and Virginia are receiving votes.
Conference play continues Thursday with a doubleheader on ACC Network. At 6 p.m., Georgia Tech heads to No. 19 Virginia Tech while the nightcap features Miami visiting No. 20 North Carolina. After a non-conference showdown on Saturday with No. 15 Notre Dame visiting No. 8 UConn (8 p.m., FOX), ACC Network will feature four games on Sunday. The Hokies will head north to take on No. 20 Syracuse at noon, while at 2 p.m., Duke visits Miami. At 4 p.m., No. 22 Florida State travels to Georgia Tech and at 6 p.m., Clemson plays hosts to Wake Forest. Also on Sunday, The CW will broadcast No. 20 North Carolina at Virginia at noon.
