Virginia Tech's Kitley, Notre Dame's Hidalgo Claim ACC Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech graduate center Elizabeth Kitley has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo earned Rookie of the Week honors. Kitley earned her second Player of the Week honor this season and 10th for her career, while Hidalgo claimed her seventh Rookie of the Week award on the year.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Kitley posted back-to-back games with 27 points and 12 rebounds, as her week was capped off by the game-winning basket in Virginia Tech’s 63-62 victory over No. 3 NC State. The Summerfield, North Carolina, native finished 22-for-39 (56.4 percent) from the field and added six blocks and three steals on the week. In Thursday’s road win at Wake Forest, Kitley became the program’s all-time leader in minutes played and finished 10-for-15 (66.7 percent) shooting for her team-high 27 points.

Hidalgo averaged 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists last week in a pair of ACC matchups. On Thursday at Pitt, the Haddonfield, New Jersey, native tallied a team-high 24 points and added six rebounds, five assists and three steals to pace Notre Dame to a 71-66 win. On Sunday against North Carolina, the guard posted her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Adding to her total last week, Hidalgo continues to lead the nation in steals (74) and steals per game (5.69).

A nation-best six teams are ranked in the latest Associated Press (AP) Poll, with three teams in the top 15. NC State is No. 6, while Virginia Tech and Louisville each gained two spots to No. 11 and No. 15, respectively. Notre Dame is No. 18, North Carolina rejoined the poll at No. 20 and Florida State moved up one slot to No. 21. Syracuse and Miami are receiving votes.

Conference play continues Thursday headlined by a Top-25 showdown when No. 20 North Carolina visits No. 21 Florida State at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. On Sunday, ranked teams collide again when No. 11 Virginia Tech heads to No. 21 Florida State for a 1 p.m. tipoff on ESPN.
