CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami graduate guard Haley Cavinder has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Georgia Tech guard Dani Carnegie earned Rookie of the Week honors for games played between December 16-22.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Cavinder averaged 22.5 points on 57.6 percent shooting (19-for-33), 12.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game this past week, leading Miami to a perfect 2-0 mark with wins over Nevada and Oregon State at the Maui Classic. In Thursday’s 84-53 win over the Wolf Pack, the Gilbert, Arizona, native tallied a game-high 25 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field, while also pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds and adding seven assists. A day later, the guard dropped in 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double on the season, leading the Hurricanes to a 61-56 win over Oregon State. For her efforts, Cavinder was named the MVP of the Maui Classic.
Carnegie averaged 13.5 points and 7.0 rebounds last week, as she led Georgia Tech to a 13-0 record, adding to the Yellow Jackets’ best start in program history. After scoring seven points in an 88-57 victory over Rice on Wednesday, the Mount Vernon, New York, native tallied a team-high 20 points in 21 minutes and knocked down four triples in a 72-61 victory over No. 23 Nebraska on Sunday. The freshman also grabbed eight rebounds and finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Six ACC teams are currently ranked in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25, headlined by Notre Dame remaining at No. 3. Georgia Tech climbed four spots to No. 13, Duke is No. 14, North Carolina is No. 17, California is No. 21 and NC State is No. 22. Florida State is currently receiving votes.
