This Week in ACC Women’s Golf: Spring Season Tees Off

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – This weekend will see a total of 10 ACC women’s golf teams tee off its 2024 spring season, with the schools competing in three different tournaments.
 
Hosted by Virginia, the Cavaliers will be joined by Florida State, NC State, and Louisville at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club on Feb. 2-3 at the Guadalajara Country Club in Guadalajara, Mexico.
 
The event will be the spring debut for the Cavaliers, Seminoles, and Wolfpack; however, it will be the second spring event for the Cardinals who defeated Indiana 5-3 in match play at the Pelican Bay Golf Club in Naples, Florida, on Jan. 16.
 
Also teeing off for the first time this spring season will be Miami, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech at the UCF Challenge, Feb. 4-6, at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.
 
Defending ACC Champion Clemson, who had three individuals play at the Lady Bulldog Invitational on Jan. 27, and defending NCAA Champion Wake Forest will start their team’s spring slate at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge on Feb. 4-6 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, California.
 
Notre Dame will open its spring season at the FAU Paradise Invitational, Feb. 5-6, at the Osprey Point Golf Club in Boca Raton, Florida.
 
The ACC is coming off a strong fall season in which the 12 league members combined to win 10 team tournament titles – Boston College (2 – Nittany Lion Invitational, Red Bandanna Intercollegiate), Clemson (1 – Landfall Tradition), Duke (1 – Landfall Tradition), Miami (2 – Pat Bradley Invitational, Hurricane Invitational), North Carolina (1 – St Andrews Links Collegiate), and Wake Forest (3 – Schooner Classic, Jackson T. Stephens Cup, East Lake Cup).

ACC Notes
• The ACC has five teams ranked in the top 30 in the latest rankings by Scoreboard powered by Clippd (Jan. 31) - No. 1 Wake Forest, No. 15 Clemson, No. 16 Duke, No. 23 Virginia, and No. 28 North Carolina. The first Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Poll will be released on Feb. 16.
 
• In the most recent Scoreboard powered by Clippd Individual Rankings (Jan. 31), Virginia’s Amanda Sambach ranks sixth, while Wake Forest’s Carolina Chacarra and Florida State’s Lottie Woad rank ninth and 10th, respectively. Clemson’s Savannah Grewal (No. 16) and Miami’s Sara Byrne (No. 22) also rank in the top 25 overall.
 
• Three ACC golfers in Sambach (Virginia), Phoebe Brinker (Duke), and Emma McMyler (Duke) accepted invitations for the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) on April 3-6 in Augusta, Georgia.
 
• Five ACC golfers in Woad (Florida State), Brinker (Duke), Rachel Kuehn (Wake Forest), Chacarra (Wake Forest), and Sambach (Virginia) were named to the Final Fall Watch List of the ANNIKA Award presented by Stifel.
 
• Page Marsh, who has served as head coach of the NC State women's golf program since its re-establishment in 2000, decided to retire effective immediately.
 
• Last season, for the first time in program history, Wake Forest won the 2023 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship after a 3-1 victory over USC at the Grayhawk Golf Club. The Demon Deacons claimed the Atlantic Coast Conference’s ninth national championship in women’s golf and first since 2019.
 
• Clemson claimed its first-ever title at the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golf Championship, as the Tigers defeated Virginia 3-1-1 at the Sedgefield Country Club.
 
• A record six ACC women’s golf teams and one individual advanced from NCAA Regional play to compete at the 2023 NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Clemson, Duke, Florida State, NC State, Virginia, and Wake Forest all finished in the top five of their respective NCAA Regionals. At the same time, Miami sophomore Sara Byrne earned a spot in the national championship field as an individual.
 
• The six ACC teams eclipsed the five-team mark set in 2016, 2017, and 2018 and were tied for the most by any conference at the national championship.
