CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech graduate center Elizabeth Kitley has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo earned Rookie of the Week honors. Kitley earned her fourth Player of the Week honor this season and 13th for her career, while Hidalgo claimed her conference-record 11th Rookie of the Week award.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Kitley averaged 24.5 points and shot 55.3 percent (21-for-38) from the field in a pair of conference wins over No. 3 NC State and Boston College. In Thursday’s win against the Wolfpack, the Summerfield, North Carolina, native led all scorers with 25 points and posted a game-high 13 rebounds, as the Hokies completed the season sweep of NC State. The center then recorded 24 points and 15 boards for her league-leading 17th double-double of the season in Sunday’s win over BC. For the week, Kitley averaged an ACC-best 14.0 rebounds, including 6.5 on the offensive end.
Hidalgo averaged a conference-best 28.5 points in a pair of ACC contests last week. On Thursday, the Haddonfield, New Jersey, native broke the program’s 44-year-old freshman scoring record with her fifth 30-point performance of the season with 30 points at No. 15 Louisville. The guard continued her scoring ways on Sunday with a team-high 27 points, while also adding seven rebounds, nine assists and five steals leading the Fighting Irish to a double-overtime win at Florida State. Hidalgo combined for eight points in both overtime periods, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line to seal the win. The freshman claimed her 11th ACC Rookie of the Week nod, breaking Florida State’s Ta’Niya Latson record of 10 awards set last season.
Five ACC teams are ranked in the latest Associated Press (AP) Poll, headlined by NC State as the lone top-10 team at No. 6. Virginia Tech moved up four spots to No. 12, while Notre Dame is No. 16, Louisville is No. 18 and Syracuse climbed four spots to No. 19. Duke and North Carolina are currently receiving votes.
The ACC women’s basketball action continues Thursday on ACC Network when a pair of Top-25 teams link up as No. 6 NC State hits the road to take on No. 16 Notre Dame at 6 p.m., while Duke visits No. 12 Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the lone Top-25 matchup features VT traveling to No. 18 Louisville for a 2 p.m. tipoff on ESPN.
