Pitt’s Hinson, Duke’s McCain Earn ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Pitt senior forward Blake Hinson earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Duke guard Jared McCain was named ACC Rookie of the Week. Both earned their respective honor for the second time this season.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Hinson averaged 34.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while going 25-of-43 (58.1%) from the field, including 14-of-26 (53.8%) from 3-point range, as Pitt extended its win streak to five games with victories over No. 21 Virginia and Louisville. The native of Deltona, Florida, scored 41 points against Louisville, tied for third most in program history, and matched his own school record by making nine 3-pointers. He became the first ACC player to score 40 points since Boston College’s Ky Bowman had 44 against Hartford on Dec. 31, 2018. It was the first 40-point game in conference play since BC’s Jerome Robinson recorded 46 in a loss to Notre Dame on Feb. 6, 2018. Hinson's 41 points matched a Petersen Events Center record as well. He finished the night 14-of-24 from the field, including 9-of-13 from 3-point range.

Hinson also scored a game-high 27 points with five made 3-pointers as Pitt posted a 74-63 win over No. 21 Virginia to snap the Cavaliers’ NCAA-best 23-game home win streak. He added four rebounds, two assists and one steal while going a then career-high 11-of-19 from the field and 5-of-13 from three-point range.

McCain averaged 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in wins over Wake Forest and Florida State. The native of Sacramento, California, scored the sixth-most points by a freshman in ACC history with his 35-point effort at Florida State. He broke the Blue Devils' freshman record for 3-point field goals made by connecting on 8-of-11 (72.7%) from long distance and matched Zion Williamson (2019) for Duke's freshman scoring record with 35 points. McCain also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds at home against Wake Forest.
