ACC Unveils Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame graduate attackman Pat Kavanagh and Virginia graduate attackman Payton Cormier shared Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Virginia long-stick midfielder Ben Wayner claimed Defensive Player of the Week.

Kavanagh scored a pair of goals and piled up 10 assists to total 12 points in the top-ranked Fighting Irish’s wins over Cleveland State and Marquette. The native of Rockville Centre, New York, passed his brother Matt for second place on the Notre Dame all-time point list, as he now has 233 in his career. His 12 points are tied for the most on the season for a Notre Dame player and his 10 assists lead the Irish.

Cormier recorded a hat trick in the Cavaliers’ 14-10 win at No. 16 Richmond on Saturday and scored the eventual game-winning goal. A native of Oakville, Ontario, Cormier shattered Doug Knight’s program record for career goals record, which stood since 1997. In 57 career games, Cormier now has 167 career goals, the most among all Division I active players. His 2.93 goals-per-game average also leads all players on UVA’s all-time career goals list.

For the second consecutive week, Wayer tallied five ground balls and added one caused turnover in the Cavaliers’ victory at No. 16 Richmond. The native of Alexandria, Virginia, played a pivotal role in the Spiders’ six failed clears, four of which occurred in the fourth quarter. Additionally, Richmond’s starting midfield line combined for just two goals. Wayer was also a key contributor on UVA’s faceoff unit, which won 15 of the game’s 26 total faceoffs, including 10-for-14 in the second half.

All five ACC squads are ranked once again in the latest USILA poll, with Notre Dame (1), Duke (2), Virginia (3), Syracuse (8) and North Carolina (15).

Syracuse starts the ACC men’s lacrosse action for this week with a matchup with Utah at noon on Wednesday. Duke entertains Jacksonville at 6 p.m. Friday, and North Carolina plays host to No. 9 Johns Hopkins at noon on Saturday. Virginia welcomes No. 20 Ohio State to Charlottesville at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
