CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.org) – A pair of record-setting performances in the distance medley relay highlight the final Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field weekly honors of the 2023-24 season. The North Carolina men and the Notre Dame women both posted conference record breaking times in the DMR in the regular season finale for both teams.
The ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships will begin on Thursday, Feb. 22, at the TRACK at new balance in Boston, Massachusetts. All three days of the championships will be broadcast on ACCNX.
Virginia swept the remaining three awards for Men’s Indoor Rookie of the Week, Women’s Indoor Rookie of the Week and Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
ACC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
North Carolina Men’s Distance Medley Relay Team, North Carolina
On the final day of the regular season, Ethan Strand, Drew Regnier, Kyle Reinheimer, and Parker Wolfe set both the ACC and school records at the Alex Wilson Invitational in the distance medley relay. It marked the first DMR race of the season for the Tar Heel team which finished second with a time of 9:17.43, marking the fourth-fastest time in NCAA history.
ACC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Notre Dame Women’s Distance Medley Relay Team, Notre Dame
The Notre Dame women’s distance medley relay team of Gretchen Farley, Jordyn Borsch, Claire Sievern, and Olivia Markezich ran one of the fastest times in NCAA history at the Alex Wilson Invitational this weekend. The Fighting Irish team set both ACC and school records in the DMR with a time of 10:44.62, which also ranks as the third-fastest in NCAA history. Olivia Markezich ran the final leg with an impressive split of 4:22 in the mile.
ACC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week
Caroline Dannenbaum, Jr., Virginia, Bernardsville, N.J.
Dannenbaum cleared 3.95m (12’ 11.5”) in the pole vault at the Virginia Tech Challenge, marking her indoor personal best. The junior from Bernardsville, New Jersey, moved up to number nine all-time in program history and is currently tied for 11th in the ACC.
ACC Men’s Indoor Rookie of the Week
Michael Koepke, Fr., Virginia, Charlotte, N.C.
Koepke matched his indoor personal-best time of 7.02 in the 60m dash prelims before improving his mark to 6.99 in the final of the Virginia Tech Challenge. The following day, Koepke clocked a time of 22.17 in the 200m, setting another new personal best. His 200m time ranks sixth among freshmen in the ACC in the event this season.
ACC Women’s Indoor Rookie of the Week
Ariel Fletcher, Fr., Virginia, Virginia Beach, Va.
At the Virginia Tech Challenge, Fletcher ran a new personal-best 56.59 to finish second in the 400m. Fletcher’s 400m time ranks sixth among freshman in the ACC. The freshmen from Virginia Beach, Virginia, also won the women's 200m dash in a season-best time of 24.97. Her 200m time is the fourth-fastest by a Cavalier in the event this season and ranks 10th among freshmen in the ACC.
