CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest junior guard Hunter Sallis earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Notre Dame guard Markus Burton was named ACC Rookie of the Week. Sallis was tabbed for the first time this season, while Burton was honored for the third time.
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Sallis had a big week for the Demon Deacons, leading his team to wins over Pitt and No. 8 Duke at home and averaging 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the field and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from 3-point range. He scored 17 points and hit all three of his 3-point attempts on Tuesday in the win over Pitt. Sallis also added four rebounds and five assists. On Saturday against Duke, Sallis racked up 29 points on 11-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
Burton averaged 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals in Notre Dame’s road games at Louisville and Syracuse. The Mishawaka, Indiana, native turned it on in the second half of both games. In the win at Louisville, he tallied 10 of his 16 points after halftime. At Syracuse, he scored 20 of his game-high 28 points after the break as Notre Dame rallied down 29 points and had a shot to tie in the final minute. Burton finished with 28 points – one shy of his season high – as well as a season-high tying eight assists.
