CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.org) – An Atlantic Coast Conference record-breaking performance from North Carolina’s Parker Wolfe highlights the league’s sixth weekly indoor track & field awards of the 2023-24 season.
Wolfe’s second indoor track & field honor of the season is paired by a trio of athletes from Notre Dame – Olivia Markezich, Michael Shoaf, and Gretchen Farley. For the second straight week and third time this season, Louisville’s Jayden Ulrich earned weekly award, while Virginia Tech’s Nate Paris picked up his first career ACC weekly honor.
ACC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Parker Wolfe, Jr., North Carolina, Denver, Colo.
With an ACC-record time of 7:37.41, Wolfe ran the fastest 3,000 meters of anyone in the country this season, securing the third-best time in the history of the NCAA, the 11th best American indoor time, the North Carolina school record, and a first-place finish at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational, hosted by Boston University. Wolfe’s time is less than one second away from the NCAA 3000m record of 7:36.42.
Wolfe becomes the first men’s track student-athlete to garner multiple weekly honors this season. The junior from Denver, Colorado, also earned the ACC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week award on Dec. 5.
ACC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Olivia Markezich, Sr., Notre Dame, Woodinville, Wash.
Markezich ran a PR time of 4:27.76 in the Meyo Invitational mile, finishing 11 seconds ahead of the next finisher. Her strong showing not only leads the ACC, but currently leads the NCAA in the women’s mile so far this season.
It is the first weekly honor of the season for the senior from Woodinville, Washington.
ACC Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week
Michael Shoaf, Sr., Notre Dame, Rocky River, Ohio
Shoaf took home first place in the shot put in the Meyo Invitational as he recorded a 19.93m throw in the event. His mark puts him atop the ACC and in second place in the nation this season. The senior from Rocky River, Ohio, also took home third in the weight throw with a 20.13m.
It is the first weekly honor for the two-time ACC outdoor shot put champion this season.
ACC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week
Jayden Ulrich, Jr., Louisville, East Alton, Ill.
Ulrich set a new indoor-best mark of 17.67m (57-11.75) in the women's shot put on her way to a victory at the Meyo Invitational by over a meter. The toss expands Ulrich's lead in the ACC in the event while also standing as the seventh-best mark in the nation.
Ulrich earns ACC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second straight week and the third time this season. She is the only student-athlete thus far with three or more indoor track & field weekly awards.
ACC Men’s Indoor Rookie of the Week
Nate Paris, Fr., Virginia Tech, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada
Paris performed well in the heptathlon over the weekend, winning the 60m (6.90) and finishing second in the long jump (7.38m), both of which were personal-best marks. The freshman from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, finished second overall, scoring 5608 and is now the only freshman to rank in the top 20 nationally for the heptathlon. His mark is the third-best in Virginia Tech history and earns Paris his first career weekly indoor track & field honor.
ACC Women’s Indoor Rookie of the Week
Gretchen Farley, Fr., Notre Dame, Indianapolis, Ind.
Farley led the Irish in the 800m of the Meyo Invitational with a time of 2:05.69. Setting a PR in the event, Farley now boasts the fifth-fastest 800m time in the ACC this season and the third-fastest time by a freshman throughout the country.
It is the first career weekly honor for the Indianapolis, Indiana, native.
