Virginia Tech Sweeps ACC Wrestling Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech wrestling swept the 2023-24 Atlantic Coast Conference Postseason Individual Awards, as National Champion and All-American Caleb Henson was named the ACC Wrestler of the Year, ACC Champion and All-American Thomas Stewart, Jr., was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, and the Hokies’ head coach Tony Robie was tabbed the ACC Wrestling Coach of the Year, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
 
The 2022-23 ACC Freshman of the Year, Henson became a two-time All-American with his first NCAA national title at 149 pounds this year.  A sophomore from Cartersville, Georgia, Henson overcame an early deficit to storm back for a 15-7 major decision win over No. 6 Austin Gomez of Michigan in the championship match.
 
Henson became the second individual national champion in VT history, joining current teammate and 2019 National Champion at 165 pounds Mekhi Lewis, and brought the ACC its 23rd all-time individual NCAA title on the mat.
 
On the season, Henson posted a record of 30-2 overall, including a perfect 11-0 record in duals and a 4-0 record in ACC duals. The ACC runner-up at 149 pounds, Henson was 16-2 overall versus nationally ranked opponents for the year and went 5-1 overall on the season versus the other seven All-Americans in the 149-pound class. The All-ACC performer posted nine tech fall wins, four major decision victories, and three falls on the season.
 
The 2023-24 ACC Champion at 184 pounds, Stewart picked up All-American honors with a seventh-place finish at the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The redshirt freshman becomes the second straight Hokie to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year, following Henson from last year, and the third Hokie to win the award in the last four years.
 
Stewart had a strong second half of the season, as the Triangle, Virginia, native went 14-4 overall, highlighted by a 10-4 record over nationally ranked opponents. He went 5-1 in duals overall on the season, including posting a 3-1 mark in ACC duals competition. The All-ACC performer totaled three tech fall wins, one major decision victory, and two falls on the season.

Henson and Stewart led eight ACC wrestlers who clinched All-America honors.

The 2023-24 ACC Wrestling Coach of the Year honor is the third consecutive for Coach Robie and the fifth in the last eight seasons.

Under Robie’s direction this season, Virginia Tech placed a wrestler in all 10 weight classes at the NCAA Championships and led all ACC teams with a seventh-place team finish. Henson and Stewart were two of a league-high four Hokies who took home All-America honors.
 
The Hokies had seven wrestlers compete in the finals at the ACC Championships and placed second in the team scoring on March 10. Lewis (174) and Stewart (184) won conference titles and seven Virginia Tech wrestlers were All-ACC.
 
Robie was previously voted the ACC Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023.
