CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College captured its second straight ACC championship, pulling away in the second half to defeat Syracuse, 15-8, Sunday afternoon in the title game of the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship, hosted at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Eagles (16-3) also earned their second ACC championship in program history and claimed the ACC’s automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

After a slow start in which top-seeded Syracuse (14-5) bolted to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter, the No. 3 seed Eagles buckled down on defense and limited the high-powered Orange offense to only one goal in the game’s final 35 minutes. BC scored 10 of the last 11 goals in the game to rally and then pull away in the second half.

BC senior defender Sydney Scales was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after anchoring a defense that surrendered just 20 goals in three games in the championship. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by her teammates Rachel Clark, Shea Dolce, Belle Smith and Cassidy Weeks.

Kayla Martello scored six goals and assisted on another to lead the Eagles’ attack on Sunday. Mckenna Davis scored a pair of goals and racked up three assists. Olivia Adamson and Emma Ward paced Syracuse with two goals apiece. Kate Mashewske again had a strong day on the draw, racking up 12 more draw controls. She finished with 43 draw controls in the tournament.

Syracuse stormed out to an early 5-1 lead in the game’s first 11 minutes before Boston College scored four consecutive goals to tie the game with 8:45 left in the second quarter. After the Orange scored back-to-back goals, Emma LoPinto’s goal with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter again knotted the score at seven heading into the halftime break.

The Eagles dominated the second half and held Syracuse without a goal in the third quarter. While the Orange racked up 24 shots in the first half, they were limited to just seven shots, including three on goal, in the second half. Martello scored four of her six goals in the second half, including four of BC’s five goals in a stretch to help the Eagles break a 7-7 tie and stretch their lead to 12-8 in the fourth quarter.

The 29-team field for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday, May 5 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The championship gets underway with 13 games at host sites on May 10.
