CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame graduate attackman Pat Kavanagh earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, and Virginia junior short-stick defensive midfielder Noah Chizmar was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Kavanagh led the Fighting Irish attack with seven points off four goals and three assists in Notre Dame's 15-12 win over No. 3 Duke on Sunday in Durham, North Carolina. Kavanagh's seven points tie his season high and his four goals are the most he has scored in a game this year. The seven points and four goals both represent the most Duke has allowed an opposing player to record in a game this season. The native of Rockville Centre, New York, now has 16 career games with seven or more points.
Chizmar had a great all-around performance in the Cavaliers’ 14-6 win over North Carolina on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Chizmar scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers while also contributing a pair of goals. He was a member of UVA’s top defensive midfield line that held UNC’s starting offensive midfield unit to without a point. One of Chizmar’s two caused turnovers came on UVA’s man-down unit in which he snagged a UNC pass out of mid-air and carried the ball across midfield to kill off the remaining time of the penalty. Chizmar set the tone early by scoring an unassisted goal on the game’s opening possession. He followed that up by notching his first career game-winning goal with 10:36 remaining in the first half.
ACC teams hold four of the top 10 positions in the latest USILA poll, with No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 Duke and No. 9 Syracuse.
There are three games on the weekend schedule. Syracuse travels to North Carolina at 1 p.m. Saturday on ACCNX. Notre Dame plays No. 10 Cornell in a neutral-site matchup in Old Westbury, New York, at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The weekend is capped with a top-five contest as Virginia plays at Duke at 2 p.m. Sunday on ACC Network.
