CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville outfielder Eddie King Jr. was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Wake Forest right-hander Chase Burns earned Pitcher of the Week honors for a league-record sixth time this season. This marks the final ACC Player of the Week honors for the 2024 season.
The ACC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week are selected by a 17-member voting panel composed of media members and announced on Mondays during the regular season.
King homered in every game of the Cardinals’ three-game sweep of Notre Dame. The outfielder went 6-for-10 (.600) at the plate in the series, logging five home runs and drove in eight runs against the Fighting Irish. The Lynwood, Illinois, native launched two long balls in the series opener before hitting another home run in the nightcap of Thursday’s doubleheader. In the series finale on Saturday, the junior was cleared for lift-off twice more, bringing his series home run total to five for the week. King has homered in his final four regular-season games and has 12 home runs in his last 19 games played before this week’s ACC Baseball Championship.
Burns matches the ACC record with his sixth Pitcher of the Week selection of the season, tying the mark set by Clemson’s Kris Benson in 1996. The junior struck out 13 hitters on Friday as the Demon Deacons battled No. 17 NC State. Burns has struck out 10 or more batters in 11 of his 14 starts this season, while also striking out 13 or more nine times. The Hendersonville, Tennessee, product allowed just one unearned run over 7.0 innings of work, sprinkling in just five base hits allowed. With 169 strikeouts on the season, Burns sits in fifth place on the ACC’s single-season strikeout list.
The 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship gets underway on Tuesday, May 21, and runs through Sunday, May 26, at Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Championship will feature a pool-play format, leading into a four-team, single-elimination bracket to determine the league champion.
