2024 All-ACC Academic Team
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College senior defender Sydney Scales was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 2024 Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads the 2024 All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse Team, announced Wednesday by the league office.
A native of Walpole, Massachusetts, Scales was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth straight season. Scales was tabbed the IWLCA National Defender of the Year and also was named the ACC Defender of the Year for the second year in a row. She led BC to its second national championship in four seasons in 2024, earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the NCAA Championship. She also guided the Eagles to their second straight ACC Championship and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Scales was a consensus 2024 First-Team All-American, earning All-America honors for the third straight season, and was named a top-25 finalist for the Tewaaraton Award. She averaged 1.9 ground balls per game and spearheaded a Boston College defense that limited its opponents to just 8.4 goals per game, which led the ACC and was fourth fewest nationally. Scales is majoring in Management.
This marks Boston College’s fifth ACC Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year distinction, as Scales joins Sam Apuzzo (2018, 2019) and Charlotte North (2021, 2022).
Each of the ACC’s five season award honorees was represented on the team – Boston College’s Scales (Defender of the Year), Belle Smith (Midfielder of the Year) and Shea Dolce (Goalkeeper of the Year), Notre Dame’s Kasey Choma (Attacker of the Year) and Virginia’s Kate Galica (Freshman of the Year).
Thirty members of the All-ACC Academic Team also were named to the 2024 All-ACC Team, including 15 first-teamers and 15 second-teamers.
The 2024 All-ACC Academic Team features 181 student-athletes from all 10 of the league’s women’s lacrosse programs. Duke led all schools with 25 honorees on the 2024 All-ACC Academic Team.
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests.
