ACC Announces Weekly Women’s Soccer Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina sophomore forward Olivia Thomas and Virginia junior forward Maggie Cagle were selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Offensive Players of the Week and Virginia sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Safradin was chosen the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played August 19-25.

Thomas tallied three goals in the Tar Heels’ pair of victories last week, headlined by her first collegiate two-goal performance in Thursday’s win over No. 16 Georgia. Against the Bulldogs, the Grosse Pointe, Michigan, native posted back-to-back goals in the 61st and 64th minute to lead UNC to its first ranked victory of the season. On Sunday, Thomas provided a late insurance goal in the 88th minute to help seal a 2-0 victory over Arizona which kept the Tar Heels undefeated on the season at 4-0. Thomas currently leads the team with eight points on the year with three goals and a pair of assists.

Cagle scored both goals in Virginia’s 2-1 victory at No. 3 Penn State on Thursday, as the Cavaliers claimed their first ranked win of the season. After UVA managed just two shots in the first half, the Phoenix, Arizona, native provided a spark and scored a 54th-minute equalizer and later knocked in a penalty in the 66th minute to seal the win. The brace is Cagle’s third multi-goal performance of her career and first of the season.

Safradin recorded six saves, including four in the second half, to help preserve a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Penn State last Thursday. After allowing an early first-half goal, the Eastlake, Ohio, native held the Nittany Lions scoreless for the remainder of the contest, despite facing 20 shots in the 90 minutes. On Sunday, Safradin also held Utah Valley scoreless after the Wolverines received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll.

ACC Women’s Soccer continues Wednesday, August 28, when Charlotte heads to NC State for an in-state clash on ACC Network Extra at 7 p.m. ET. Fourteen matchups are on the docket for Thursday, August 29, headlined by a pair of Sweet 16 teams colliding when defending national champion Florida State welcomes Georgia for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff on ACCNX.
