ACC NOTES
ACC Continues Partnership with College Football Playoff Foundation
- The ACC announced its plans to partner with the College Football Playoff Foundation (CFPF) again as part of this year’s Extra Yard for Teachers Week (September 14-21). The initiatives include support for this year’s Extra Yard for Teachers Week, Big Day for Teachers and the distribution of grant funds to support teachers in Charlotte. (Release)
- For the second straight year, the ACC will work with a local Charlotte Mecklenburg School (CMS) to remodel a space that will directly impact the school’s students on a daily basis. Last year, the conference worked with members of the Winding Springs Elementary administration, teachers and staff as they were the recipients of a $50,000 Extra Yard makeover. Additional details on this year’s makeover will be announced in the future.
- Since the inception of the ACC and CFPF partnership, over $1.2 million has been given to support teachers in the ACC footprint. During the 2023-24 school year, the CFPF and ACC supported over 4,000 students.
Conference Play to Ramp Up in Week 4
- The ACC was the only conference to have played conference games in each of the first three weeks (Week 0, Week 1 and Week 2) of the season to start the year.
- Following the Week 3 hiatus in conference play, the ACC will have four conference games in Week 4, including the first-ever ACC league games for both Stanford and Cal.
ACC History – First ACC Games for Stanford and Cal
- Week 4 of the 2024 college football season will mark a historical one, as Stanford and Cal will both play their first conference games as ACC members.
- The conference games for the Cardinal and Golden Bears will mark the first non-Pac-12 conference games in the two programs’ long history, as the two schools have only been members of the Pac-12 Conference before this year’s move to the ACC.
- Stanford and Cal have a chance to join seven other full-time schools - Duke, North Carolina, Maryland, Florida State, Miami, Louisville and Virginia Tech, as well as Notre Dame (2020) - in winning their first conference game as a member of the ACC.
Close Calls Continue in ACC Play
- The ACC has been known for close games each year throughout conference play the last few years. Prior to the start of this season, the ACC had 73 league games decided by eight points or less over the last three years (2021-23).
- The 73 one-touchdown score games came over 168 total conference games during the three-year span, a mark of 43.5 percent.
- The trend has continued this season in 2024, as three of the four ACC league games to date have been decided by less than eight points.
ACC in Non-Conference Play
- Through Week 3 of the 2024 college football season, the ACC is 31-9 overall in non-conference play.
- Overall, the ACC has six non-conference wins versus fellow Power 4 conference foes.
- The ACC has recorded five non-conference wins over the other Power 4 conferences on the road (5-3).
- Week 4 features eight non-conference games for ACC teams - including three against Power 4 opponents.
Rivalry Games – In and Out of Conference Play
- Week 4 will see a pair of rivalry games – one in conference and one out of conference play.
- In ACC play, Clemson and NC State will meet in the Textile Bowl for the 92nd time on Saturday, September 21, at noon ET on ABC. For more than three decades, the series between NC State and Clemson was dubbed the Textile Bowl, as that industry has a major economic impact on both states.
- Out of conference play, in-state foes SMU and TCU will meet in a cross-town Battle for the Iron Skillet on Saturday, September 21, at 5 p.m. ET on The CW. It will be the 103rd meeting for the two programs, with neither school able to decide on how the Iron Skillet trophy came about.
Closing in on a Milestone
- Clemson earned its 799th all-time win two weeks ago at home versus App State (September 7) to pull within one victory of becoming the 14th FBS program, and first ACC program, ever to win 800 games.
