Friday night’s contest between the Hokies and Hurricanes will be the ACC opener for both teams this season. The Hurricanes hold a 25-15 advantage over the Hokies in the storied all-time series, which has featured some of the league's most memorable games. Miami’s Cam Ward became just the 13th player in NCAA history to log 15,000 career passing yards last week against USF. Ward is one of two active FBS quarterbacks with 15,000 or more career passing yards, joining Oregon’s Dillion Gabriel. Miami has been successful on both sides of the ball this season, boasting the nation’s second-best passing offense (405.0 yards per game), while also leading the FBS in sacks per game, averaging 4.00.
On the contrary, Virginia Tech has been phenomenal at stopping the pass this season, boasting the ACC’s second-best passing defense, allowing just 160.0 yards per game. The Hokies have also shut opponents down in the red zone, allowing scores on just 68.4 percent of their opponents’ red zone appearances. The Hokies’ Bhayshul Tuten leads the ACC and ranks seventh nationally with seven rushing touchdowns this season, including three against Rutgers last week.
