SMU’s Edwards, Stanford’s Okorie Notch ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – SMU senior guard B.J. Edwards notched Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, and Stanford guard Ebuka Okorie claimed the ACC Rookie of the Week distinction for games played from December 22-28, as announced Monday.
 
Edwards was selected ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season (November 24), while Okorie nabbed his first ACC Rookie of the Week honor.
 
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are nominated by the respective schools and determined by a vote of an 18-member media panel.
 
B.J. Edwards., Sr., G, SMU (Knoxville, Tennessee)
• Recorded his second triple-double of the season on Sunday, December 29, in a 110-63 win against Cal State Fullerton.
• He totaled 21 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals while hitting 8-of-10 field goals and 3-of-5 on threes.
• He is the seventh player in ACC history to record two triple-doubles in a career.
• He joins Clemson’s Sharone Wright (1992-93), Maryland’s Derrick Lewis (1986-87), NC State’s Dennis Smith (2016-17) and Virginia’s Ralph Sampson (1979-80) as the only players to record a pair of triple-doubles in the same season.
• He is the only player in the nation with multiple triple-doubles this season.
 
Ebuka Okorie, Fr., G, Stanford (Nashua, New Hampshire)
• Led the Cardinal with 30 points in an 88-80 win over Cal State Northridge on Saturday, December 28.
• Finished 9-for-18 from the floor with four 3-pointers and eight free throws
• Okorie, who broke Stanford’s freshman scoring record with 32 points on December 20 against Colorado, is the first Cardinal student-athlete with back-to-back 30-point outings since Landry Fields on Jan. 23 and 28, 2010.
• First player in the ACC this season to have back-to-back 30-point games and just the third to have two 30-point outings this season.
• Moved into the top-three in the nation in scoring with the performance (22.8 ppg).
