CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State senior guard Aziaha James has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Duke forward Toby Fournier earned Rookie of the Week honors for games played between February 3-9.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
James averaged 29.0 points on 64.9 percent (24-of-37) shooting, while also totaling 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals across 36.6 minutes per game. On Monday, February 3, the Virginia Beach, Virginia, native registered a career-high 36 points on an efficient 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) shooting from the field with six boards in an 89-83 win over No. 10 Duke in front of a sold-out crowd inside Reynolds Coliseum on its annual Play4Kay Night. James’ 36 points against Duke were the most scored by a member of the Wolfpack since 1998. The guard followed that performance with her 11th 20-point effort of the season with 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals in a 97-74 victory at No. 22 Florida State. With her 58 total points last week, James moved to 20th on the NC State all-time career scoring list.
Fournier averaged 18.3 points per game on 58.3 percent (21-for-36) shooting in three conference matchups last week. After she dropped in 11 points in Monday’s road setback at No. 14 NC State, the Toronto, Ontario, native led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-12 (75.0 percent) shooting in a 74-55 home victory over Clemson on Thursday, February 6. The forward capped off her week with a career-high 24 points in 24 minutes to pace the Blue Devils to a 90-49 home win over Miami on Sunday, February 9.
Six ACC teams are in the latest Associated Press (AP) Top 25 Poll, headlined by Notre Dame climbing a spot to No. 2. NC State also moved up in the poll, rising four positions to No. 10, while North Carolina moved up one spot to No. 12. Duke is No. 13, Georgia Tech is No. 19 and Florida State is No. 23, while California and Louisville are receiving votes.
The ACC Women’s Basketball action continues Thursday, February 13, with eight conference games on the schedule. The slate is headlined by a tripleheader on ACC Network beginning with Miami visiting No. 10 NC State at 6 p.m. ET. At 8 p.m. ET, No. 2 Notre Dame will hit the road to Pitt, while the nightcap features Syracuse heading to Stanford at 10 p.m. ET.
