CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina sophomore guard Reniya Kelly has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Louisville guard Tajianna Roberts earned Rookie of the Week honors for games played between February 10-16.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Kelly entered last week averaging just 9.1 points per game on the season and closed the two-game span becoming the first Tar Heel to record back-to-back 20-point performances this season. The Hoover, Alabama, native opened the week with 20 points on 7-for-14 (50.0 percent) from the floor, including a 2-for-2 mark from 3-point range, and a 4-for-4 tally from the free throw line, as she led UNC to a 67-62 win over Virginia Tech. In Sunday’s 66-65 win over No. 10 NC State (February 16), Kelly posted a career-high 23 points and knocked down five 3-pointers to pace North Carolina to its first top 10 win of the season.
Roberts, who earned her fifth ACC Rookie of the Week honor this season, registered her first collegiate double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a road win over No. 23 Florida State. The San Diego, California, native finished 6-of-14 from the floor, including three triples, and also shined defensively, grabbing nine defensive rebounds and swiping two steals, as the Cardinals held the Seminoles to just 69 points, their lowest point total of the season. Roberts was the only freshman in the ACC to notch a double-double last week.
Five ACC teams are in the latest Associated Press (AP) Top 25 Poll, headlined by Notre Dame becoming the No. 1 in the country for the first time this season. North Carolina and Duke also climbed up the poll, as the Tar Heels moved up three spots to No. 9 and the Blue Devils gained a pair of spots to No. 11. NC State is No. 13, and Georgia Tech is No. 20, while California, Florida State and Louisville are receiving votes.
The ACC Women’s Basketball action continues Monday evening, February 17, when top-ranked Notre Dame plays host to No. 11 Duke at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Fighting Irish are the first ACC team to be ranked No. 1 since Louisville on January 18, 2021.
