GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships began Tuesday, February 18, in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. North Carolina took the lead on the women's side after day one with 187 points, while California holds the lead on the men’s side with 172 points.
The Stanford women claimed the 200-medley relay title with a time of 1:34.05. The relay team was made up of leadoff freshman Levenia Sim, sophomore Lucy Thomas, junior Gigi Johnson and junior Torri Huske. With the win, the Cardinal broke Virginia’s streak of five-straight 200-medley relay victories at the conference championship meet.
California took first in the men’s 200-medley relay with a time of 1:21.54. The squad of leadoff Bjorn Seeliger, Yamato Okadome, Oludare Rose and John Alexy touched the wall first, followed by Florida State and NC State in second and third, respectively.
North Carolina senior Aranza Vazquez Montaño repeated as the 1-meter diving champion for the third consecutive year, posting a score of 357.40 through six dives. She is the first diver to go back-to-back-to-back in the women's 1M since Virginia Tech’s Kalyea Arnett in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Miami’s Mia Vallee finished behind her in second with a score of 349.30 while teammate Chiara Pellacani followed in third with a 329.55.
Virginia then secured its 18th-straight victory and 28th overall win in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay, setting the NCAA, ACC and ACC Championships record with a 6:44.13. Gretchen Walsh led off the race followed by her sister, Alex Walsh, then Aimee Canny and Claire Curzan to give the Cavaliers an advantage over Stanford, who finished second in 6:51.79, while Cal touched the wall in third at 6:55.98. With her leadoff 200 free split of 1:39.34, Gretchen Walsh broke the ACC 200 free record that was previously set by Louisville's Mallory Comerford (1:39.80) in 2018.
Cal captured the men’s 800-free relay title in 6:06.66, finishing ahead of Stanford in second at 6:08.70 and NC State in third at 6:09.18. The top nine finishes earned NCAA A cuts.
Max Fowler won the men’s 1-meter title with a score of 421.90, improving 47.55 points from his third-place finish at the 2024 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. SMU freshman Luke Sitz, who broke the ACC record of ACC Men’s Diver of the Week in a single season with six honors, placed second with a score of 420.50. Pitt’s Cameron Cash rounded out the top three with a 397.70.
The championships continue Wednesday, February 19, at 9:30 a.m. ET with preliminary events and Wednesday's finals events start at 5:30 p.m. ET. Wednesday’s action will air live on ACC Network Extra. Direct links to the ACCNX feeds and live swimming and diving results are available HERE.
