Duke’s Flagg, BC’s Hand Jr. Garner ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College sophomore guard Donald Hand Jr. and Duke freshman guard/forward Cooper Flagg shared Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Flagg once again earned Rookie of the Week honors for games played February 16-23.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are nominated by the respective schools and determined by a vote of an 18-member media panel.

Flagg was named ACC Rookie of the Week for the 11th time this season, setting a league record which previously was held by three others: Kenny Anderson, Georgia Tech, 1990; Tyler Hansbrough, North Carolina, 2006 and Jabari Parker, Duke, 2014. Flagg earned ACC Player of the Week honors for the fifth time, while Hand Jr. claimed the honor for the third time, which is the second most among all ACC players to Flagg this season.

Hand Jr. averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in wins over Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. The native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, led all scorers with 16 points in the win over the Hokies on Wednesday, February 19, with 11 of his points coming in the second half. He also was key in the defensive effort as the Eagles set a program record for fewest points allowed to an ACC opponent (36). On Saturday, February 22, against Georgia Tech, Hand led all scorers with 20 points, marking his ninth game this season with at least 20 points.  He connected on 7-of-14 shots from the floor against Georgia Tech, including four 3-pointers.  He also added seven rebounds and remains one of four players in the ACC to rank among the top 20 in scoring (16.6, 8th) and rebounding (6.3, 16th).

A native of Newport, Maine, Flagg averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.0 blocked shot in wins over Virginia and Illinois, while shooting 13-of-26 (.500) from the field and 6-of-7 (.857) from the free-throw line. He registered his seventh double-double of the season during an 80-62 victory at Virginia on Monday, February 17, by amassing 17 points and a season-best 14 rebounds, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks. In his debut at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, Flagg tallied 16 points, seven boards and five assists, as the Blue Devils defeated Illinois, 110-67, the Fighting Illini's largest margin of defeat in program history.
