Duke’s Flagg, BC’s Hand Jr. Notch ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College sophomore guard Donald Hand Jr. and Duke freshman guard/forward Cooper Flagg shared Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week laurels, while Flagg again claimed Rookie of the Week honors for games played January 27-February 1.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are nominated by the respective schools and determined by a vote of an 18-member media panel.

Flagg was named ACC Player of the Week for the fourth time, becoming the first freshman in conference history to earn Player of the Week honors four times in a season. He was tabbed as ACC Rookie of the Week for the ninth time in 13 weeks, including the fifth straight week and the sixth time in the last seven weeks. He is one shy of the conference record for Rookie of the Week honors in a season.

This marks Hand’s second ACC weekly honor of the 2024-25 season (December 30).

Flagg averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocked shots during a 2-0 week with wins over NC State and North Carolina. The native of Newport, Maine, collected 28 points, seven boards, three assists, a steal and a block against the Wolfpack on Monday, January 27, then amassed 21 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks against the Tar Heels on Saturday, February 2. Including his assisted scores, Flagg accounted for 37 points (21+16) against North Carolina and 34 points (28+6) versus NC State, an average of 35.5 points responsible for per contest - 44% of Duke's offensive production.

Hand Jr. poured in a career-high 31 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds in a 77-76 comeback victory over Florida State in BC’s lone game of the week. A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Hand connected on 8-of-17 shots from the floor, including 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. The six 3-pointers were also a career high. He hit 9-of-9 from the free-throw line. Hand scored 17 of his 31 points in the second half, helping to fuel the comeback for Boston College as the Eagles rallied from a 15-point deficit with 12 ½ minutes remaining and by as many as eight with less than a minute in regulation. He was the only major conference player to tally at least 30 points and nine boards in a game this week.

Earlier this season, Hand made ACC history as part of the only father-son duo to earn ACC Player of the Week honors. Donald Hand Sr. won the award on January 31, 2000, while starring as a guard at Virginia.
