CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame sophomore guard Hannah Hidalgo has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Louisville guard Tajianna Roberts earned Rookie of the Week honors for games played between January 27-February 2.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Hidalgo averaged 32.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and shot 57.9 percent (22-for-38) from the field in a pair of ACC victories last week. In addition, the Merchantville, New Jersey, native finished a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line. The sophomore opened her week with 30 points on 10-of-16 shooting and five assists in the Fighting Irish’s 77-61 road victory at Virginia Tech on Thursday. Hidalgo continued her scoring ways on Sunday when she dropped in 34 points with six rebounds and five assists in an 89-71 victory at Louisville. The guard became the first player in Notre Dame history to post back-to-back 30-point performances twice in a career, as she is now tied for the nation’s lead in scoring at 26.1 points per game.
Roberts averaged 19.5 points and shot 14-for-28 (50.0 percent) from the field in two ACC games last week. In Thursday’s 80-75 road victory at SMU, the San Diego, California, native tallied a team-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting and handed out a career-high five assists. Her night was capped off by the game-clinching bucket with 56.0 seconds left to seal the win and her third 20-point effort of the season. On Sunday against No. 3 Notre Dame, the freshman led the Cardinals with 17 points and knocked down four 3-pointers.
Seven ACC teams are in the latest Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll with Notre Dame continuing to lead the way at No. 3 for the seventh straight week. Duke remained at No. 10, while North Carolina climbed two spots to No. 13 and NC State jumped into the top 15 at No. 14. Georgia Tech moved up to No. 17, California is No. 21 and Florida State gained three spots to No. 22.
The ACC Women’s Basketball action continues Thursday, February 6, with seven league matchups on the docket. ACC Network will host a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. ET when Syracuse heads to Virginia Tech and No. 21 California visits Louisville at 8 p.m. ET. At 8:30 p.m. ET, No. 3 Notre Dame plays host to Stanford on ESPN.
