CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame sophomore guard Markus Burton earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Duke guard Cooper Flagg earned Rookie of the Week honors for games played March 2-8.
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are nominated by the respective schools and determined by a vote of an 18-member media panel.
Flagg was named ACC Rookie of the Week for a league-record 12th time this season. The previous mark of 10 was held by three others: Kenny Anderson, Georgia Tech, 1990; Tyler Hansbrough, North Carolina, 2006 and Jabari Parker, Duke, 2014.
Burton averaged 33.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in tight victories over Stanford and California. A native of Mishawaka, Indiana, Burton hit 45.7% of his shots from the field, including 7-of-13 (53.8%) from 3-point range. He also nailed 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the free-throw line. On Saturday, March 8, he dropped a career-high 43 points in the 112-110 quadruple-overtime win over Cal. Twenty-one of his points came in the four overtime periods where he was 6-of-9 from the field, 4-of-4 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 from the stripe. Burton’s 43 points were the most by an Irish player in an ACC game. They were also the most points scored by an ND player since Adrian Dantley recorded 49 against Air Force on February 10, 1975, and the most points by any ACC player in a conference game since Boston College’s Jerome Robinson scored 46 against ND on February 6, 2018. Burton also supplied 24 points on Wednesday, March 5, in the 56-54 win over Stanford.
Flagg averaged 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 3.5 blocks and 1.0 steal in wins over Wake Forest and North Carolina. The native of Newport, Maine, shot 51.6% (16-of-31) from the field, 40.0% (4-of-10) from behind the arc and 87.5% (7-of-8) from the free-throw line for the week. Flagg amassed 28 points, eight boards, seven assists, three rejections and two steals in a 93-60 win over Wake Forest on Monday, March 3, then posted 15 points, nine boards, six assists and four blocks in an 82-69 road victory over North Carolina on Saturday to clinch the ACC regular-season championship for the Blue Devils.
