CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse redshirt-senior attackman Owen Hiltz earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Orange junior goalie Jimmy McCool was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for games played from March 3-9.
Hiltz tallied four goals and an assist to pace Syracuse to a 13-10 home victory over No. 7 Johns Hopkins. Having a hand in two of the final three goals, the Peterborough, Ontario, native scored the eventual game-winning goal and later added an insurance tally just 30 seconds later. Three of his five points came in the fourth quarter after the Orange was facing an 8-6 deficit with four minutes left to play.
McCool made 12 saves and recorded his first career win over a top-10 program following Syracuse’s upset win over No. 7 Johns Hopkins. Posting his fourth double-figure save outing of the season, the Boston, Massachusetts, native stopped 12 shots, matching his season high. Within his dozen saves, the junior made four saves in the decisive fourth quarter to help fuel Syracuse’s late rally.
Five ACC teams are ranked in the latest USILA Coaches poll, led by North Carolina at No. 4. Duke is No. 6, Notre Dame is No. 8, Syracuse is No. 10 and Virginia is at No. 18.
Five more non-conference games are scheduled this week, headlined by a pair of top-20 matchups on Saturday, March 15. At noon ET, No. 4 Duke heads to No. 14 Richmond, while at 4 p.m. ET, No. 18 Virginia hosts top-ranked Maryland on ACC Network.
