PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (theACC.com) – NC State’s Vince Robinson earned his first NCAA national title and the ninth in NC State program history on Saturday night at the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Robinson (23-3) is the first Wolfpack to win an NCAA title on the mat since Michael Macchiavello at 197 pounds in 2018.
The redshirt freshman from Chicago, Illinois, took a 1-0 lead with an escape in the second period only to see No. 7 Troy Spratley (24-5) of Oklahoma State tied the match up with an escape of his own in the third period. In the first tiebreaker, Robinson scored a 1-point escape and the 2-1 win to secure the 125-pound crown.
ACC wrestlers have now won 24 all-time individual NCAA titles, including five individual national titles on the mat since 2021.
Virginia Tech’s Caleb Henson (22-1), a three-time All-American, reached the finals for the second straight season at 149 pounds and looked to defend his title from a year ago against No. 2 Ridge Lovett (25-2) of Nebraska in a rematch from last year’s semifinal.
In a great wrestling bout, Henson appeared to have scored a 3-point takedown in the second period, only to see the call overturned on a challenge by Nebraska. With the score at 0-0 to start the third period, Lovett picked up a 1-point escape, which was all he would need to hold off Henson for the 1-0 decision.
In addition to Robinson and Henson, eight other ACC wrestlers finished in the top eight of their respective weight classes at the NCAA Championships, earning 2025 All-American honors.
At 125 pounds, Virginia Tech’s Eddie Ventresca placed fifth overall, bouncing back from a 4-1 sudden victory loss to No. 1 Luke Lilledahl to defeat No. 8 Sheldon Seymour of Lehigh 11-4 in the fifth-place match.
At 133 pounds, Virginia Tech’s Connor McGonagle finished sixth overall after suffering a pinfall loss to No. 8 Braeden Davis of Penn State in the fifth-place bout, while Stanford’s Tyler Knox placed eighth following a 7-2 defeat to No. 17 Jacob Van Dee of Nebraska in the seventh-place contest.
North Carolina’s Lachlan McNeil picked up his third All-American honor with a fifth-place finish at 149 pounds, rebounding from a 7-1 loss to No. 13 Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio State earlier in the day to beat No. 12 Ethan Stiles of Oregon State 8-4 in the true fifth-place match.
At 165 pounds, Stanford’s Hunter Garvin finished sixth overall, falling to No. 4 Terrell Barraclough of Utah Valley 1-0 in the fifth-place bout, while at 174 pounds, NC State’s Matty Singleton earned a seventh-place finish with a 3-1 decision over No. 7 Danny Wask of Navy.
Also posting a seventh-place finish at 197 pounds was Pitt’s Mac Stout, as the Panther secured a dominant 12-3 major decision victory over No. 20 Camden McDaniel of Nebraska in the seventh-place match.
NC State's Isaac Trumble earned a fourth-place finish and just missed placing in the top three at 285 pounds. The first-time All-American started his day with a 4-3 decision over former teammate and two-time ACC Champion No. 4 Owen Trephan of Lehigh to advance to the third-place match. There, he fell to No. 9 Cohlton Schultz of Arizona State in a hard-fought 5-3 decision to finish fourth overall.
In addition to the 10 All-Americans, Pitt’s Luca Augustine was awarded the Elite 90 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 90 championships. Augustine is the first ACC wrestler to win the elite award.
Penn State four-peated as the NCAA team champions with an NCAA record 177.0 points. The Nittany Lions finished ahead of Nebraska in second with 117.0 points and Oklahoma State in third with 102.5 points.
NC State led all ACC schools with 46.5 points, good enough for eighth overall, while Virginia Tech placed 11th overall with 41.0 points.
