CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Six Atlantic Coast Conference teams – No. 5 North Carolina, No. 7 Virginia, No. 8 Duke, No. 12 NC State, California and Stanford – will compete this weekend, May 9-10, in the super regionals of the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship.
The six ACC teams are tied for the most of any conference among the final 16 teams.
The winners of the super regionals will advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. The final rounds will be played from May 16-18 at Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
The 2025 ACC Champion and No. 5-seed North Carolina (25-4) cruised through the Chapel Hill Regional last weekend with a pair of 4-0 shutout wins over VCU and South Carolina. The Tar Heels, who have won 10 straight matches, reached the Round of 16 for the 15th consecutive year and 19th time overall.
The Tar Heels will host No. 12-seed NC State (19-6), as the Wolfpack defeated Charleston Southern, 4-0, and UCF, 4-1, on their home courts at the Raleigh Regional to move on to the super regionals of the NCAA Championship. It marks the sixth straight season in which the Wolfpack have reached the Round of 16.
The two teams will meet on Friday, May 9, at 5 p.m. ET at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. North Carolina is 2-0 versus NC State this spring, recording a 4-3 win over the Wolfpack at home on March 23 in regular season play and a 4-1 victory in the semifinals of the 2025 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship on April 19 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
The last time these two teams met in the NCAA Championship was in the championship match in 2023, a 4-1 win for the Tar Heels, who won their only NCAA title in women’s tennis.
No. 7-seed Virginia (22-5) went 2-0 on the weekend at the Charlottesville Regional, securing a 4-0 sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, May 2, and a 4-1 victory over Illinois on Saturday, May 3. This marks the 11th time overall in which the Cavaliers have reached the Round of 16 and the fifth straight season.
The Cavaliers will host No. 10-seed Tennessee (19-7) in the super regional on Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m. ET at the Virginia Tennis Facility in Charlottesville, Virginia. Tennessee swept through the Knoxville Regional with 4-0 wins over Elon and Pepperdine last weekend. The Cavaliers lead the all-time series with Tennessee 8-7. Virginia has won the last five meetings, including a 4-2 win this season on February 7 in the Round of 16 of the 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
No. 8-seed Duke (23-3) and the 2025 ACC Regular Season Champions will also host a super regional after recording back-to-back 4-0 victories against Bryant and FAU over the weekend to move to 13-1 at home at the Ambler Tennis Stadium this season. With the regional win, the Blue Devils advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the 29th time in program history and the first time since 2022.
The Blue Devils will host No. 9-seed Auburn (25-6) on Friday, May 9, at 5 p.m. ET in Durham, North Carolina. Duke is 6-1 all-time versus the Auburn Tigers. However, Auburn defeated the Blue Devils, 4-2, in Durham in the two teams’ last meeting on January 27, 2024.
California (15-8) swept through the Seattle Regional, posting a 4-0 win over Sacramento State in the first round on Friday before upending No. 16-seed Washington 4-0 on Saturday on the Huskies' home court. It marks the second consecutive season in which Cal has reached the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championship and the 35th time overall.
The Golden Bears will face the No. 1-seed Georgia Bulldogs (25-3) in Athens, Georgia, on Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m. ET. The match will mark the second straight year that Cal has played at Georgia in the super regionals. Last year, the Bears fell to the Bulldogs, 4-2, in Athens.
Stanford (17-8) advanced to the super regionals after tallying back-to-back 4-1 wins over FIU and No. 11-seed Texas Tech in the Lubbock Regional last weekend. The Cardinal will make their fourth straight trip to the Round of 16 and the 42nd out of 43 championship tournaments overall.
The Cardinal will take on Oklahoma State (21-7) in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in the super regionals on Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. ET, as the Cowgirls swept Tulsa, 4-0, and upset No. 6-seed Oklahoma, 4-2, to advance.
Stanford defeated Oklahoma State, 4-3, in the championship match to win the 2016 NCAA Women’s Tennis Team title. The Cardinal are 3-0 versus the Cowgirls all-time in NCAA Tournament play and 6-1 overall. However, Oklahoma State won the last meeting between these two teams at the 2024 ITA Indoor National Championships.
As part of a two-year pilot program, the women’s singles and doubles championships were conducted in the fall of 2024, while the team championships will take place in the spring of 2025.
