CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) - The 72nd season of Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer officially gets underway on Thursday, August 21, with all 15 programs in action.
ACC Network showcases a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 6 p.m. ET with Virginia Tech entertaining No. 3 Ohio State, which competed in the 2024 NCAA College Cup. The nightcap at 8 p.m. ET features No. 6 Wake Forest playing host to Maryland.
Noting ACC Men's Soccer
• Eight ACC teams are ranked in the Preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll, including three in the top 10: SMU (5), Wake Forest (6), Pitt (7), Clemson (9), Stanford (13), NC State (14), Duke (15) and Virginia (17). Both totals are the most of any conference.
• Among the key ACC's returners this season are Pitt’s Casper Svendby, a 2024 First-Team All-American and ACC Defensive Player of the Year, as well as All-Americans Ulfur Bjornsson (Duke) and Cooper Flax (Wake Forest) and the 2024 ACC Freshman of the Year, Ransford Gyan of Clemson.
• ACC teams have won 20 NCAA men’s soccer championships, with 11 since 2001, including three of the last four (Clemson 2021 & 2023, Syracuse 2022). Eight active ACC programs have won at least one national championship, the most of any conference. The 15 active ACC schools have combined for 20 titles.
• At least one ACC team has reached the Men's College Cup in 22 of the last 24 seasons. Thirteen of the 15 active ACC programs have reached the College Cup. Sixty-five ACC teams have reached the College Cup all-time.
• Six active ACC head coaches have won D-I national championships as a head coach: Mike Noonan (Clemson), Carlos Somoano (UNC), Jay Vidovich (Pitt), Jeremy Gunn (Stanford), Ian McIntyre (Syracuse) and George Gelnovatch (Virginia). NC State's Marc Hubbard won a Division II national title in 2013.
• The ACC led all leagues with 21 players selected in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. NC State’s Hakim Karamoko (No. 10, Colorado) was the first ACC player selected.
